Your sister Lily is sick, and her treatment is expensive. The all-night donut shop by the hospital bus line is hiring for seven nights: ten to six, fifty a night plus tips, and a continuation contract if you work out. You are Alex Carter, and you take the job. TALK TO CUSTOMERS Take orders at the register and get to know the night crowd: Jack the cab driver, Nora from the hospital and whoever else walks in out of the rain. Then fry, glaze and fill the donuts, flip pancakes, bake cakes and cookies, pour coffee, box it all up, set it on the pickup tray and ring the bell.
